More than 100 dead, more than 700 injured, thousands made homeless and an almost incalculable destruction of buildings and infrastructure are shocking facts of the flood of the river Ahr in July 2021. Almost 200 hectares of land along the river Ahr were flooded. The devastating extent of the flood makes it one of the most severe natural disasters in Germany. We made a donation to the district of Ahrweiler right at the beginning.
Business Operation Systems and its employees fulfill the social responsibilities we believe companies should take on today. We pay taxes in our customers’ markets, we only hire employees on permanent contracts, and we offer life-phase-related, part-time employment options. We combine work on the road and in the home office with activities at our locations. We are financially committed to people who cannot develop socially and economically to the same extent we are able to.
On the night of September 9, 2020, strong fires completely destroyed the Moria refugee camp on Lesvos. 12,000 people were left homeless, including unaccompanied children. We supported the SOS Children’s Villages with a donation this year. They started emergency relief measures after the devastating fire, distributed mattresses and blankets and are in exchange with the Greek authorities to support especially unaccompanied children in the best possible way.
Over 23 percent of the people in Turkana are malnourished. The reason for this is the prolonged drought in the region. Pregnant and lactating women are particularly affected. Together with local partners, Welthungerhilfe is working on the ground to ensure that women and children have a starting basis for a healthy, independent life during this difficult time. We support Welthungerhilfe with a donation for the “Drought Widows” project.
More than 50 million people are on the run worldwide. The Arbeiter Samariter Bund (ASB) is currently caring for around 53,000 refugees in 206 shelters across Germany. In a former printing plant in Neu-Isenburg, 700 refugees are housed and cared for by the ASB. The humanitarian organization takes care of the people and we were happy to support this commitment with a donation to the ASB.
The humanitarian situation in Syria is deteriorating dramatically.
Many Syrians have left their homes and places of residence, seeking refuge from the violence in refugee camps – in their own country and beyond the borders. Help is urgently needed, so we have supported the German Red Cross with our donation.
Typhoon Haiyan destroyed entire regions in the Philippines. More than four million people lost their homes and all their belongings as a result of the fourth strongest hurricane ever recorded. To support the people in this region, our donation went to the Welthungerhilfe relief project.
There is also increasing material need in our country. We have therefore supported the work of the Frankfurter Tafel food bank with a donation. This large organization with ten distribution points is the point of contact for up to 20,000 needy people.
Hunger and drought in the Horn of Africa has always been an issue. The reports about the suffering in Ethiopia and the rural regions of Kenya motivated us to support Welthungerhilfe with a donation in their efforts to take measures to prepare for the next growing season.
After the earthquake in Haiti, we made a spontaneous donation to World Hunger Aid projects to rebuild infrastructure and promote agriculture in the spirit of helping people to help themselves. Our next contribution also went to Haiti, where the need was still great months after the disaster but the first successes of the international efforts were already visible.
The next Welthungerhilfe project we supported focused on providing the basic necessities for the survival of the population in Darfur. It continues to be provided, even with increasingly difficult conditions for aid organizations. Therefore, we have also repeatedly donated to projects in Sudan.
During the Sudan crisis, we supported the German Red Cross with our donation to set up health projects in the huge refugee camps of people who fled from Sudan into the desert.
